Kahi Mohala
A mentally impaired patient who calls Kahi Mohala home, the Psychiatric housing that welcomes these people, might be able to say that they are truly home.
My mother, her name was Nani, was sent to Kahi Mohala when I was just a toddler. What was her mental illness? From what I’ve heard, its very hard to say, to diagnose, and to treat.
Kahi Mohala means to unfold and blossom in Hawaiian. One of the only memories I have of my mother when visiting her at Kahi Mohala was seeing her artistic abilities and eating the yummy ice cream that the facility had to offer family members.
For me, to be perfectly honest… I experienced a truth of mental impairment that my mother experienced.
Homelessness, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, hormonal imbalance, and having a hard time determining the truth of the society you, her, or I, live in.
Outcasts, discarded, rejected, and unwanted individuals, I know where you are coming from. Maybe I can help.
